5 Essential Oils for This Fall Season and Why
Happy fall season!
We have officially reached the month of October and with that, I am in full on fall mode.
Are you team summer stay forever or bring on cozy season?
We have had a wonderful summer in our new home out in the country. But frankly, temperatures have been pushing well over 90 degrees on some days. So, I have been ready for it to cool down more: the crisp, often misty mornings, and the chill in the air when the sun is setting are my favorite times of the day.
I am sharing with you 5 essential oils for this fall season. They are wonderful on their own, or blended together. Helpful to support emotions and even immune function, while making your house smell lovely - naturally.
Orange (Sweet) (Citrus sinensis)
A refreshing, bright, and citrusy aroma, Sweet orange is a favorite essential oil for all ages. It gives a boost of energy, lifts the mood, and can give new motivation. It aids in lowering stress levels, and supports a more stable mood by easing feelings of irritability.
Due to proven anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) actions, Sweet orange can be especially helpful in the fall, when some people experience “autumn anxiety” and may be more prone to slipping into depression due to the shorter days and fewer hours of sunlight.
Sweet orange essential oil has air purifying properties and, apart from bringing a wonderfully fresh and clean scent into your home, can keep germs at bay.
Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis)
With its fresh, pine-like aroma with a slightly fruity note, Juniper berry uplifts the senses, clears negative emotions, and helps renew energy especially in a season of change, when daylight fades sooner.
It has shown antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antimicrobial actions, among others. Therefore, it is lovely to diffuse around the house and, quite literally, clears the air of unwanted germs. Juniper berry is also an expectorant, meaning it helps clear mucous from the lungs when suffering from a cold, for instance.
Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
Cinnamon leaf essential oil has a spicy, faint earthy, musky aroma with a slightly sweet note that evokes feelings of warmth and comfort during the colder months. It is lighter in its aroma than Cinnamon bark essential oil.
This oil is warming to the muscles and joints, alleviating stiffness, and increasing circulation. With its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, as well as antioxidant actions, Cinnamon leaf can clear the air of undesirable germs, can be helpful in enhancing immune response, and is soothing to the lungs when suffering from congested airways and cough.
Caution: Do not use directly around or on children under 10 years old.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Ginger is most commonly known for its affinity with the digestive system. However, it is a lovely essential oil for the fall season as its warm, spicy aroma can bring about feelings of comfort and emotional rest. Being a root oil, Ginger is grounding and can also support greater motivation during the colder months, enhance focus, and support mental clarity during this changing season.
On a physical level, it has warming therapeutic actions, so it is lovely when diluted with a carrier oil and applied to stiff, achy muscles and joints. It is also soothing to the lungs during a common cold, congestion, and even bronchitis, as it has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antitussive (helps with coughs) and antioxidant properties.
Frankincense (Boswellia sacra)
Frankincense essential oil has a fresh, woody-earthy aroma. On an emotional level, it is used for its grounding, calming, actions. It can also help lift the spirits during this season of change, when depression, due to the shorter days, can set in with some people.
Physiologically, it has shown immune enhancing actions, has antibacterial, as well as antimicrobial properties, among others. In addition, it is gentle for children, as it is for adults, supporting the respiratory system during cough and sniffle season and, as light expectorant, supports the removal of mucous from the lungs.
