10 Things to Keep in Mind When Using Essential Oils

Welcome! I am glad you stopped by.

Let me begin this post by saying this:

Essential oils are safe — when used appropriately.

Even trained aromatherapists have conflicting opinions about, let’s say, the undiluted (neat) topical application of essential oils, for instance, and when it comes to dilution ratios (how many drops of essential oils per amount of carrier oil for safe dermal application), you may also find varying information.

So, what does this mean?

When in doubt, dilute, dilute, dilute: Begin with very little essential oil.

This is one of the beauties of aromatherapy: You can always increase the number of drops once you have gotten more familiar with an oil, its therapeutic actions, and know you don’t have any adverse reaction to you.

So, if you are just starting out using essential oils + aromatherapy, here are 10 things that hopefully help you on your path to incorporating plant essence into your daily life.

10 Things for Essential Oil Safety

The following is a quick overview: A list of 10 things to keep in mind when using essential oils.

I will elaborate on some of those points in a future blog posts. If you have a question, please send me a message or leave a comment and I will be more than happy to address it.

  1. Store essential oils in a safe space inaccessible for children.

  2. Refrain from using internally unless trained on this matter.

  3. Always dilute essential oils when used topically; when in doubt, dilute even more.

  4. Do not use essential oils in eyes or nose (apply any vegetable oil to closed eye lid if it happens accidentally).

  5. If skin irritation occurs, use a carrier oil such as olive, coconut, any vegetable oil, on affected area.

  6. Know which oils can be phototoxic and cause a reaction when in contact with UV light/direct sun.

  7. EOs are highly flammable, so keep away from flames and gas.

  8. Always diffuse essential oils in a well-ventilated room and not too close to young children.

  9. If child has swallowed large amounts of EOs, call poison control and give (whole) milk to drink.

  10. Use with caution when pregnant or on/with children/babies; a drop goes a long way and I suggest refraining from using on newborn babies unless really necessary (such as severe tummy issues).
