5 Essential Oils I Keep Handy (+ Why)

Hello everyone!

These are five of the essential oils I always keep handy, because they do so much for both physical and emotional well-being.

Here they are —

and this is how I use them.

FRANKINCENSE (Boswellia sacra)

A wonderfully grounding but also skin supporting oil. We diffuse it for a calming atmosphere within our home and I use it with other oils in a roller bottle to apply topically for when I feel anxious. Frankincense also supports our respiratory system and since it is - when used appropriately - safe for children, I put it in the diffuser to aid in keeping airways clear or use it in a roller blend with Cardamom on my kids’ chest when they are congested.

THIEVES (essential oil blend)

A synergy of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon bark, Rosemary, and Eucalyptus radiata essential oils that helps us stay above the wellness line. Thieves Vitality blend supports our immune system when used internally in tea or Ningxia antioxidant drink, or topically. We also diffuse it to purify the air and enhance our breathing experience. If I had to describe its aroma, I would say it smells like Christmas spice. So, naturally, it also lifts the mood. I also add it to our Thieves cleaner and other cleaning DIYs to boost natural cleaning power.

GRAPEFRUIT (Citrus paradisi)

Just like the latin name says: A whiff of paradise. This is one of my favorite oils (and I love all citrus oils) because it does wonders for my mood. It is such a happy oil with an amazingly fresh and uplifting aroma. Hence, why we diffuse it in the playroom or in the kitchen. But Grapefruit essential oil (Grapefruit Vitality), when taken internally, also supports the body’s natural detoxification abilities and can help with digestion. And it is so tasty when added (a drop goes a long way) to a glass of water.

EUCALYPTUS (Eucalyptus globulus)

All things respiratory support: Eucalyptus has an aroma that we all probably know too well (think cough drops). It is also incredibly refreshing and boosts circulation when used as part of a natural salt or sugar scrub and can enliven tired muscles. It naturally wakes you up in the morning when you diffuse it or add a few drops — as I like to do it — on a washcloth and leave it in a steaming shower. I also make my own Clear Airways salve to apply to chest and back, helpful to breathe freely during cold season or when allergies hit.

YLANG YLANG (Cananga odorata)

With its very floral aroma, I like to call it a very feminine essential oil. And, technically, it is, because it helps stabilizing mood during that specific time of the month (I also add it to a roller bottle with a blend I apply to my abdomen when I feel crampy). Ylang Ylang is also a very calming oil and works well with Geranium and Lavender in homemade bath salts to unwind in the evenings. I oftentimes add it to wool dryer balls for a lovely laundry scent.

Do you use any of those oils?
